Inspired by Jean Genet's "The Maids," this provocative and polished drama is set in 1930s France and stars Richardson and May as two repressed sisters who work as servants to an obsessively demanding madam (Walters) who rules her house, and the life of her daughter, with a velvet-gloved iron fist. Held virtual prisoners in the claustrophobic house, the two young women soon become incestously involved with each other and their hot passions soon unravel their facade of orderliness. A highly sensual, intense, at times funny but ultimately unsettling tale.
