REVIEW
Written and directed by music video auteur Anderson, this hip, slick and colorful debut film takes an unsentimental look at the life of Billy (Law), a young adrenaline junkie recently released from prison. Abandoned by both parents and society, he spends his time stealing cars and robbing shops with his friends, including Jo (Frost), an adoring young Irish girl who sees Billy's self-destructive nature but can do nothing to change it. At odds with the police (in the person of Pryce) and a jealous chieftan (Pertwee in a terrific and intense performance), Billy careens along his collision course with arrest and/or death with reckless abandon. Anderson brings a remarkable visual artistry to the film, imbuing it with equal parts MTV fast-cuts and Terry Gilliamesque urban British waste-scape.
