SKINOPSIS

Stanley Kubrick is such a fucking sadist, and not in the way that we like. Why did you have to tease us with statuesque beauty Lia Beldam slowly getting out of the tub and showing her rack and bush only to totally kill any possibility of hard-on maintenance when suddenly she's like this old undead crone whose covered with some sort of disgusting crap. We can dig that kind of thing sometimes but we have to be ready for it and this movie's already so fucking slow that we wanted to shove nails into our eyes.

Nicholson is at his absolute lunatic best as a once loving father who slips deeper and deeper into homicidal frenzy. His family is contracted to care for a snow-bound, and decidedly sinister, hotel and the descent into madness begins. For those who have read Stephen King's masterpiece of horror and suspense, Kubrick's treatment may be disappointing, but the film is worth a look for Nicholson's inspired ravings and for Garret Brown's stunning Steadicam photography. (Remade in 1997)
