REVIEW
Against the vast backdrop of the sweltering heat and punishing sky of Northern Africa, Bertolucci's intimate epic (adapted from Paul Bowles' classic novel) follows the lives of three American travelers during the early 1950s. A husband and wife (Malkovich, Winger) and their traveling companion (Scott) embark from Tangier in search of the "real" Morocco. Slow moving, with the sumptuous photography one would expect from the director of The Last Emperor, this is a sun-drenched existential journey that should enthrall the patient viewer. Malkovich is perfect as the arrogant and unfeeling husband who is overwhelmed by culture shock, and Winger's performance as a complacent woman who undergoes a radical transformation is mesmerizing.
