Pacino gives a sterling performance in this based-on-fact story about a non-conformist New York City undercover cop who is ostracized by his fellow officers when he reports widespread police corruption. Director Lumet's first of his "corruption" films (followed by Prince of the City, Q & A and Night Falls on Manhattan) is a hard-hitting and exemplary look at one man's personal courage. Fine location shooting helps in the authenticity of the story. Based on Peter Maas' best-seller.
