The Secret Rapture

David Hare's masterful screen adaptation of his original play is this study of a young woman (Stevenson) who must reevaluate her life when her father's death leaves her in the care of his manipulative, alcoholic widow (Whalley-Kilmer). The film is at once intimate and powerful and, flawed fourth act notwithstanding, is consistently gripping. Stevenon goves a remarkably textured performance that is sorrowful and triumphant.
