Director Frears and writer Hanif Kureishi reunite after their triumphant My Beautiful Laundrette to fashion another brilliantly scathing portrait of present-day London. Sammy (Din), the son of a right-wing Pakistani politician, is involved with a sexually liberated English woman (Barber). When his father, fleeing political enemies, comes to live with them, their informal relationship begins to mirror the mounting social unrest in the streets outside their window.
