Alexander's family is gathered to celebrate his 70th birthday. A quiet tension fills the air. When an uneasy silence is shattered by an emergency broadcast which reports an impending nuclear attack, they begin to fall apart. Alexander then learns of a way the disaster can be prevented... but is the world worth saving? In this, his final film, Tarkovsky forms a powerful vision of the future which will haunt the memory.
