Martin's comic tour de force performance highlights this breathlessly funny updating of "Cyrano de Bergerac." Martin plays a small Northwestern town's fire chief whose elongated nose has kept him from romantic entanglements; that is, until he falls in love with beautiful astronomy student Hannah. Rossovich is the handsome but vacuous hunk -- himself terrified of romantic repartee -- who speaks Martin's heartfelt words of love. Duvall offers wonderful support as Martin's confidant. Martin's "20 insults" is a classic. (Though Michael Douglas won the Oscar that year for Wall Street, Martin's performance was by far and away the year's best.)
