Midler makes an impressive film debut as a hard-drinking, fast-living rock chanteuse -- suggested by the life of Janis Joplin -- struggling against the pressures of success. Bates is her mean-spirited manager and Forrest is her on-again, off-again lover. The film's musical numbers contain a raw energy thanks to the conviction of the Divine Miss M, and her earthy performance avoids the usual industry clichés. You Might Also Like
