A perfect counterpiece to Rob Reiner's Stand by Me, released the same year, River's Edge is the disturbing story of a group of burned-out '80s teens who find the body of a friend killed by a classmate, greeting the discovery with a lack of emotion or concern. A gripping story of youthful alienation and hopelessness. Hopper is effective as a half-crazed ex-biker and, interestingly, is the film's moral center. Based on an actual incident.
