REVIEW
The American film debut of prodigious Hong Kong superstar Chow-Yun Fat must rank as a disappointment. This is a far cry from the movies that won Chow a following in the West -- the delirious gun operas of directors John Woo and Ringo Lam. The film's thin plot is even a steal from Woo's The Killer: Chow's hit man -- ordered by his employer to murder a cop's young son as revenge for the drug bust death of his own slimy dealer son -- has a last-second change of heart, and spends the rest of the film trying to protect his initial hit. Chow is his usual ultra-cool self, and even Sorvino is fun as the streetwise tough who reluctantly assists him. But director Fuqua's style is all attitude and posturing, vapidly aping Woo and Lam, but possessing none of their passion or artistry. An entertaining though empty action flick.
