Beatty won a Best Director Oscar for this epic drama about the last years of John Reed, the American journalist who becomes involved in the Russian Revolution. Keaton, in a finely controlled performance, is Louise Bryant, his wife. This long but interesting film serves as both lush romantic drama and political exposé. Nicholson, as a heartbroken Eugene O'Neill, steals every scene he's in. Stapleton also won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress.
