A Blood Simple-esque thriller that offers more twists than a Philadelphia soft pretzel. Cage is as an out-of-work wildcatter with a gimpy leg, a heart of gold and a pocketful of lint who sees dollar signs when a small-town bar owner (Walsh) mistakes him for the hit man he just hired to kill his wife (Boyle). Then the real killer (perennial ham Hopper) shows up. Perhaps the only film ever to go from cable to video to a successful theatrical run, this sleeper is an expertly plotted game of cat-and-mouse and a well-studied tribute to the film noir era.
