REVIEW
Forman, a director who can take the most difficult source material (One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Hair) and create masterworks, has done it again with this remarkable screen version of E.L. Doctorow's complex novel. Set in New York City in the turbulent early 1900s, the story follows black musician Coalhouse Walker, Jr. (Rollins, in an outstanding performance) and his quest for justice after being the victim of a racial attack. After a 20-year absence in film, Cagney returned to the screen to play the Police Commissioner. Ragtime features a superb ensemble. (Made into a critically acclaimed Broadway musical.)
