REVIEW
Some say that Fassbinder was past the point of dissipation as he worked on Jean Genet's homoerotic story of lust and murder. There is no denying that the final result lacks the cohesion of the director's greatest works. But its ominously dark and determinedly artificial sets, the pervasive homosexual iconography and the stylized acting all gel to create a brooding, melancholy mood quite fitting with the classic novel. Davis is Querelle, a ruggedly handsome, narcissistic and sexually confused sailor who exploits and even kills the ones who lust after him. Nero is perfect as the commander who secretly worships him while Moreau is completely miscast as Querelle's part-time lover and brothel madam. (English language version)
