REVIEW
Smith won a much-deserved Best Actress Oscar (edging out Jane Fonda's staggering portrayal in They Shoot Horses, Don't They) for her magnificent performance as an eccentric schoolteacher in 1930s Edinburgh. Based on Muriel Spark's novel, the story centers on the schoolmistress' life in and out of the classroom, where she exerts an enormous influence on her young, impressionable girls. A sincere and absorbing character study. You Might Also Like
