REVIEW
Directed in the same style as his Oscar-winning Dances with Wolves, Costner gets sanctimonious once again, but this time with a screenplay so staggeringly inane you don't dare take any of it to heart. He plays a drifter in post-apocalyptic middle-America, a land now devoid of government and torn by gangs and renegade armies. When Costner steals the uniform from a dead postman (and takes his mail bag), he unintentionally becomes a beacon of hope for a gaggle of survivors (he represents the restoration of the government back East). The image of the mailman as savior of the new frontier — and as heroic action figure, period — is so ridiculous the movie borders on sheer camp. Yet Costner maintains an intended tone of solemnity, provoking enough snickering to make this the funniest unintentional comedy of the year.
