REVIEW
On the heels of Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood's Oscar-winning, revisionist westerns comes director Van Peebles' distinctive, anachronistic updating of the genre. Van Peebles stars as a "mysterious drifter" who leads a down ’n' dirty posse of Army deserters in escaping from a renegade colonel (Zane) and engaging in a leprechaunic quest for stolen gold. And while the film historically acknowledges the presence of black cowboys on the American frontier in much the same way Glory did for the Civil War, it is most effective when viewed as Hollywood escapist fare.
