Point of No Return

For those who saw Luc Besson's dazzling La Femme Nikita, it is difficult to recommend this faithful remake. Though the film copies the original nearly shot-for-shot, it lacks its predecessor's visual panache and chilling neo-pop style. Standing on its own, it is not an unworthy effort. Fonda is fine in the lead role of a societal throwaway who is saved from the executioner by a shadowy government official who wants to make a super assassin out of her. Still, she's no match for the pouty and vulnerable Anne Parillaud, who originated the role. It's yet another case of Hollywood not being able to leave well enough alone.
