Reynolds plays a suspended, washed-up cop, awash in booze and self-pity, who is the prime suspect in the murder of an old criminal adversary. Prospects look grim when the defender's office assigns the neophyte "little rich girl" Russell as his lawyer. Did he kill during a drunken fury or was he set up? You may know the answer long before the final resolution, but the film's deft action and Reynolds' always-present self-deprecating humor helps gloss over the film's inconsistencies with plot to produce a mindless escapist entertainment.
