REVIEW
First-time director Parker's brooding, sexy adaptation of one of Shakespeare's most enduring works bares the distinction of being the first theatrical film version to use an African-American actor (Fishburne) in the role of the Moorish general. The story, of course, centers on Othello's manipulation by the power-hungry lieutenant Iago (Branagh), who makes Othello believe his new bride (Jacob) is guilty of infidelity and, ultimately, drives him to madness. This is an enthralling reworking which gives power to Shakespeare's written word and the emotions they harness. Fishburne is right at home with Shakespeare's poetry, giving a tense, emotional portrayal. Branagh (who obviously slid from the womb quoting the Bard) is mesmerizing as the evil Iago, and Jacob makes for a tragically beautiful Desdemona. The story centuries later resonates and has lost none of its universality. Editor's Suggestions
