REVIEW
Adapted from Virginia Woolf's 1928 modernist novel, this is a wholly original, stunningly filmed comedy of sexual mores, attitudes and gender switching. The tale begins in 1600, when the bewitchingly androgynous Orlando captures the eye of the aging Queen Elizabeth I (regally played to the hilt by Crisp), who promises the nobleman the deed to his family's estate on the condition that he retain his beauty and does not age. As the centuries roll by, the immortal Orlando strolls through the elaborate pageant of English history. During this quest for love and self-discovery, Orlando changes sexes while still retaining his/her personality, independence, kind heart and droll sense of humor. Spectacularly staged and costumed, and featuring a hypnotic soundtrack (including Jimmy Somerville), this witty, enchanting film is infused with wry jokes and emotional truths and is a thrilling odyssey that should not be missed.
