Nothing to Lose (Tim Robbins)

The premise of the black con and uptight white guy coming together for a series of misadventures is already becoming passé, but the amiable if familiar Nothing to Lose manages to entertain in spite of its clichéd roots and predictable plot, due in large part to the teaming of Lawrence and Robbins. Upon discovering his wife in bed with his boss, a distraught Robbins drives aimlessly throughout the city. Things go from bad to worse when Lawrence attempts to hijack his car. With nothing to lose, the captive becomes the captor as Robbins turns the tables and takes Lawrence prisoner, taking him on the wildest ride of his life. Robbins is a delight as the sad-sack husband who finally throws caution to the wind and goes for broke. Lawrence adds just the right amount of urban cool and wry delivery to his hapless carjacker and gives a funny, even restrained performance. If only the screenplay were as consistent and fresh as the two stars.
