Born into a Europe ravaged by plague and the persecution of the Inquisition, physician Michel de Nostradame garnered a reputation as a mystic and seer, acquiring fervent enemies and attracting powerful friends from the monarchy and from secret societies of learning. The rabid suppression of knowledge by the establishment religion necessitated that information be passed in secrecy, under sworn oaths of silence. This workmanlike exposition of Nostradamus' life and times is enhanced by beautiful cinematography and exquisitely detailed period costume. Though the film opens slowly, it's worth a bit of patience; the viewer is amply rewarded.
