REVIEW
Newman's superlative performance distinguishes this excellent and at times humorous character study of an aging rambler who tries to piece together the loose ends of his life. In one of his most accomplished screen portrayals, Newman plays Sully, a sixty-ish handyman with a bum leg who lives in a small New York town. Divorced and estranged from his family, this lothario who refuses to acknowledge the passing of time has been seemingly content with both odd jobs thrown his way and his own meager existence. But when he is reunited with his son and forced to reexamine his life, Sully's soul-searching leads to magnificent, introspective dramatics. Based on Richard Russo's novel and skillfully adapted by director Benton, Nobody's Fool is a grand, intimate day-in-the-life which pays tribute to the ordinary in a most extraordinary way.
