After watching this excruciating, but unequalled, version of George Orwell's classic novel, one may well be expected to seek counseling. Gripping performances by Hurt, Burton (in his last screen appearance) and Hamilton along with impressive production design and grainy, muted cinematography, power this overwhelming and gloomy depiction of Orwell's futuristic nightmare world.
