This Greek Pygmalion was a huge international hit when first released and was considered quite daring in its day. Mercouri is unforgettable as an exuberant and carefree prostitute who meets up with an American tourist (Dassin) who falls in love with her and attempts to educate her to the finer things in life. Mercouri won the Best Actress Award at Cannes and the film won an Academy Award for Best Song. A thoroughly entertaining romp with wonderful location shooting in Piraeus and the Greek countryside.
