A Midnight Clear

Gordon's second directorial feature is a vigorous and very polished antiwar drama, and a much more assured piece of filmmaking than his debut The Chocolate War. Set during the last months of WWII, the story traces the emotional toll taken on a group of weary, young G.I.s at the front line who come in contact with a group of German soldiers. The equally tired enemy soon makes clear their desire for surrender. As each side cautiously builds to a ceasefire, both armies enjoy a respite from the hell around them. But for how long? Gordon handles his young cast very well.
