REVIEW
One of the most devastating black comedies and potent antiwar films ever to hit the screen, Altman's blisteringly funny, anarchic romp rocketed him to stardom and set the tone for a generation of irreverent filmmakers. Set during the Korean War, the film stars Gould (back when he had screen presence) and Sutherland as two hotshot, unconventional doctors assigned to a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. In between the blood and death of war and surgery, they let loose in binges marked by drinking, sex, disobedience and other flagrant actions of nonmilitary behavior. Kellerman is terrfic as "Hot Lips" Houlihan, and the rest of the supporting cast is first-rate. The film was made into a successful TV series which only partially retained the film's hard edge and biting cynicism.
