Baldwin plays a brilliant surgeon newly arrived to a small New England town. He rents a room from married couple Kidman and college professor Pullman. In a nasty series of events, Baldwin unnecessarily operates on Kidman, initiating a multimillion dollar lawsuit. But this is only half of it. And what begins as a slow-paced melodrama quickly blossoms into a cagey psychological thriller complete with figure-eight plot twists and baffling detective work. In the Body Heat mold, the film takes wicked delight in its crafty composition. Pullman ties the film together with his sleuthing academic.
