Jean Genet's feverish, claustrophobic play about the sadomasochistic games, brought on by sexual and emotional frustrations, between two servants is brought to the screen in this faithful, if overheated, theatrical adaptation. Jackson and York give stellar performances as the docile maids to a bossy woman (Merchant) who, when her back is turned, elaborately stage a series of sexual fantasies involving domination and submission. (Remade in 1995 as Sister, My Sister)
