REVIEW
Russell kept his normal excesses to a minimum in this sumptuously filmed and costumed biography of the famed Swedish composer Gustav Mahler. The film is a dazzling evocation of the loves, moods and music of the artist. Through flashbacks and beautiful dream imagery, it focuses on the tormented life and turbulent relationship he endured with his wife. Such Russellisms as a dream sequence with a Nazi Pope (a Nazi Pope?) do sneak through. On the whole, however, this is Russell in a mellow mood.
