Gould gives his best performance as a burned-out Philip Marlowe out to find out if and why he was framed by a good friend (Bouton) for a woman's murder. Altman takes the tired, used-up detective film genre and fills it with quirky, nasty characters and bizarre humor. Look for On Golden Pond director Rydell as an incredibly sadistic, dry-witted gangster who can injure his loved ones just to show what he can do to people he hates.
