REVIEW
An absorbing, noir-influenced thriller which skillfully merges two violent, obsessive love triangles, 40 years apart. Anderson is an architectural journalist who, while on a visit to his home town to see his dying mother (Novak in a wonderful supporting role), meets an old friend, Paul (Pullman). Paul is a real estate developer in the process of tearing down a main street department store which has been shuttered for 40 years after the gruesome double murder of its owner and his mistress. The writer's interest in the building and its mysterious past causes him to become romantically involved with Paul's wife, who is photographing the building's destruction. The result is a torrid tale of lust and jealousy. This is the director's cut, seven minutes longer than the theatrical version.
