Bogdanovich's brilliant adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel is regarded as one of the definitive coming-of-age sagas: not only in its depiction of the "end of innocence" for its characters, but for an entire way of life. Set in a one-horse town in 1950s Texas, the film stars Bottoms and Bridges as heatstruck teens sweltering in the dustbowl of their own lives. Leachman and Johnson won Oscars for their gutsy portrayals. Bogdanovich's eye for the period and place paints a picture of a ghost town more chilling than any horror movie. (Sequel: Texasville)
