Rourke stars in this stylish, gritty thriller as a petty thief -- whose facial disfiguration has given him the unkindly nickname of "Johnny Handsome" -- who is double-crossed by fellow gang members during a robbery. In prison, he undergoes cosmetic surgery, and with a new face and a release from jail, sets out to get revenge. Among the film's supporting cast, Barkin and Henriksen as Rourke's vicious ex-mates, Freeman as a cop not fooled by a pretty face and Whitaker as the doctor who performs the surgery, are all first-rate.
