An embittered Close defends a charismatic San Francisco newspaper publisher, played with sleek charm by Bridges, in this well-crafted murder mystery/courtroom drama. Coyote almost steals the show as the skeptical D.A. who steadfastly refuses to believe Bridges' protestations of innocence of his wife's murder. Close gives a fine, believable performance in both the courtroom encounters and in her romantic involvement with Bridges. Loggia received an Oscar nomination for his salty-tongued investigator.
