SKINOPSIS

Argento's sequel to Suspiria is an almost incomprehensible collection of bizarre images and fantastically realized setpiece murders. It lacks a linear narrative, but that does not detract from its overall ambiance of weirdness and terror. A young American poet discovers a book which she believes identifies her ancient New York apartment building as the residence of the Mater Tenebrarum, the mother of shadows, one of three witches who generate all the misery in the world. The first mother, Mater Suspiriorum, lives in Freiburg and was the subject of Argento's Suspiria. Inferno is full of stylistic touches which overcome its narrative difficulties. Suspiria and Inferno are the only two films Argento has made with purely supernatural plots, a fact which gives him the freedom to completely abandon all logic and submerge himself in the stylish, horrifying impulses which make him unique among horror film directors.
