Household Saints

In her previous feature-length outings (True Love, Dogfight), director Savoca evidenced an uncanny ability to capture the feel of the films' eras and environments. In Household Saints, she adds an element of the surreal which creates the mythic dimension with which we remember our childhoods and the stories our parents and grandparents told us. D'Onofrio and Ullman are winsome as the husband and wife (he wins her in a pinochle game) whose daughter (Taylor) becomes the neighborhood saint in 1950s Brooklyn. The film is delightful, funny and entertaining.
