One of Bergman's most powerful works, Hour of the Wolf is a nightmarish drama of mental illness and creative intensity. A successful painter (von Sydow) and his loving wife (Ullmann) spend the summer on a barren island where, spurred by insomnia and haunted by demons both real and imagined, the man's sanity slowly unravels while his distraught wife helplessly watches.
