From one of the directors of Airplane! comes this often hilarious parody of military and pilot films, Top Gun in particular. The jokes are delivered at a machine-gun pace and most of them succeed. Sheen, satirizing his Navy SEALS role, is the Tom Cruise-ish, hotshot pilot competing against arrogant Elwes. Bridges shows up as an admiral who is obviously related to Bridges' Airplane! air traffic controller. Obviously, all are in Airplane! territory, here. And though the film doesn't reach the comic heights of that classic, Hot Shots is nevertheless a high-flying romp. (Sequel: Hot Shots! Part Deux)
