Barker's riveting directorial debut is unquestionably one of the most serious and intelligent horror films in recent memory. Told from the perspective of Kirsty, our teenage heroine, this phantasmagorical tale of gruesome family secrets finds its beginnings with her Uncle Frank, a sinister sensualist who cracks the code of a mysterious Chinese puzzle box and thereby opens the door to another dimension. Through this threshold come the dreaded Cenobites (led by the menacing Pinhead), a punked-out crew of otherworldly sadists with a penchant for ripped flesh and steaming entrails.
