Hear My Song

Made in the tradition of the Ealing Studio comedies with a splash of Local Hero thrown in, Hear My Song is a delightful frolic about a sprightly young Irishman trying to make a go of it as a nightclub operator in Liverpool. After making a series of disastrous bookings, he is forced to try and save his venue by luring the famed Irish tenor Josef Locke (Beatty) back from Ireland where he's been avoiding British tax collectors. Dunbar (who cowrote the screenplay with first-time director Chelsom) delivers a winning performance as the music promoter Mickey O'Neill. Beatty is marvelous as Locke, putting in one of his best performances.
