Guinevere

There are moments of brilliance in Guinevere, writer-director Wells thoughtful take on the uneasy relationship between a young girl and a much older man, but once the film makes its points, it has nowhere to go. Harper (Polley) is an insecure teen on the cusp of adulthood receiving life lessons from Connie Fitzpatrick (Rea), an aging photographer who seduces her. While this sounds very salacious, Wells handles their relationship with extreme care and sensitivity. Guinevere contains a few real epiphanies, but there are an equal number of frustrating scenes, mostly involving Connie's past lovers. The two leads are well cast, and in support, Smart is superb as Harper's disapproving mother.
