The talents of De Palma are wonderfully previewed in this early directorial effort. Clearly showing his film school background, De Palma structures this witty satire on the '60s counterculture in a series of vignettes. A very young De Niro stars as one of three friends living in New York City. The story follows their resourceful attempts to keep one of them from being drafted. Consistently funny and inventive, the film was cowritten by De Palma and Charles Hirsch, and was soon followed by Hi, Mom!
