REVIEW
After such films as White Mischief and The Kitchen Toto, two of the better stories exploring British imperialism in Africa, it would take a film of great skill and freshness to expound on the theme. Unfortunately, A Good Man in Africa is not that film. Not entirely, anyway. The affable Friels stars as a British diplomatic attache whose disastrous attempts to keep order backfire at every turn. A good supporting cast includes Gossett as a presidential nominee needing a rather dishonest favor from Friels; Lithgow as an uproariously pompous dignitary; and Connery as a dedicated doctor and the titular good man. A Good Man is low-key and often flat, but it also contains many small charms at the most unexpected moments.
