REVIEW
This bittersweet Irish yarn tells the tale of a slightly psychic young French girl (Parillaud) and her Irish-born dwarf son, Frankie. Weeks before D-Day, Parillaud makes the disastrous error of predicting the invasion a day early. Stricken with grief, she stows away on an American troop ship only to be dropped off in Ireland, pregnant. She finds a benefactor in a kindly customs officer (Byrne) who helps her through hard times and becomes a surrogate father to Frankie, and plants in the young boy a love of stargazing. Later, G.I. Dillon shows up and woos them both with his Yankee charm. Not a lot transpires in Frankie Starlight, but its likable characters and generally mirthful outlook make it a completely enjoyable lark.
