This fascinating character study follows an aimless drifter who abandons the accoutrements of middle-class existence (and a promising musical career) for a life on the road spent amongst the squalor of cheap bars, bowling alleys and shabby motels. Nicholson gives a virtuoso, career-making performance, and Black and especially Smith as Nicholson's sister are outstanding in support.
