REVIEW
Sometimes outstanding special effects, innovative visuals and an inspired production design can save an otherwise mediocre film. This is almost true in the case of Event Horizon, but not quite. Its lame-brained script, underdeveloped characters and seen-it-all-before feel work too strongly against it. Fishburne stars as the commander of an interstellar rescue team which is sent to investigate a previously "lost" ship, the Event Horizon. Once on site, they find out that the Event Horizon is a sort of ghost ship which begins to exert harmful psychological influences over the rescue team. The movie then moves into the territory of The Haunting, The Shining and Alien and further into the horror realm. Event Horizon makes the mistake of cribbing from too many previous successes. Nevertheless, the production team deserves points for its outstanding visual design, which combines the best of the futuristic style with a Gothic cathedral look for a truly creepy aesthetic.
